About the Catalina 30
The Catalina 30 occupies an unusually important place in North American sailing history. Introduced in the mid-1970s, it combined the accommodations of a substantially larger cruiser with a manageable rig, moderate displacement and a price made possible by high-volume fiberglass production. More than six thousand were built during a production run extending into 2008, making the Catalina 30 one of the most successful production keelboats of its size.
For this site the model has particular significance: DreamWeaver is a 1985 Catalina 30 Mk I, placing her near the end of the original Mark I generation.
Origins of the Catalina 30
Catalina Yachts' official chronology records the Catalina 30 as being introduced in December 1974, following the success of the Catalina 22 and Catalina 27. The original Catalina 30 factory brochure identifies Frank Butler as the designer.
Butler's objective was not to create an exotic racing yacht or a small offshore passagemaker. The Catalina 30 was conceived as a practical family racer-cruiser: roomy enough for weekends and vacations, straightforward to sail and maintain, and economical enough to reach a broad market. Its generous beam and relatively full hull produced an interior volume that was striking for a boat just under thirty feet long.
The design was successful almost immediately. Catalina's chronology notes that the new model won its class in the Newport-to-Ensenada Race soon after introduction, demonstrating that the emphasis on interior volume and value had not prevented the boat from delivering respectable sailing performance.
The Basic Design
The principal dimensions of the Catalina 30 remained remarkably stable through its long life. Early factory literature lists a length overall of 29 ft 11 in (9.12 m), a waterline length of 25 ft (7.62 m), a beam of 10 ft 10 in (3.30 m), a displacement of approximately 10,200 lb (4,627 kg) and about 4,200 lb (1,905 kg) of lead ballast. The standard deep fin keel draws approximately 5 ft 3 in (1.60 m).

The figures above are representative factory and class-association dimensions; Catalina itself cautioned that production measurements and equipment could vary. The International Catalina 30/309 Association's one-design specifications provide the most useful consolidated reference for the principal hull and rig measurements.
A Large Interior for a Thirty-Footer
Interior space was one of the Catalina 30's defining characteristics. Butler used a broad beam, considerable interior volume and molded fiberglass liners to create accommodations that compared favourably with many longer boats of the period. The original brochure offered both traditional and dinette arrangements and advertised standing headroom of roughly 6 ft 3 in.
A particularly important packaging decision was the location of the auxiliary engine relatively close to the centre of the boat rather than occupying the extreme stern. This helped make room for a large quarter berth aft on the starboard side. Forward was a conventional V-berth, with the main saloon, galley and enclosed head arranged between the two sleeping areas.
The result was not a luxurious yacht in the custom-boat sense. Instead, it was an efficient use of volume: a boat capable of carrying a family or group of friends in reasonable comfort while remaining simple enough for ordinary recreational ownership. That combination is a major reason the Catalina 30 became so common on lakes and coastal waters throughout North America.
Rig and Keel Choices
The Catalina 30 was produced in several rig and keel configurations. The International Catalina 30/309 Association identifies four principal rig arrangements: the standard rig, standard rig with bowsprit, tall rig, and tall rig with bowsprit.
The standard masthead-sloop rig uses an “I” dimension of approximately 41 ft. The tall rig adds about two feet of mast height and also uses a slightly longer boom. The bowsprit versions move the forestay farther forward, increasing the foretriangle. These combinations gave owners a choice between a more conservative sail plan and additional sail area for lighter-air locations or owners seeking greater performance.
Keel options also evolved. The original deep fin keel, drawing about 5 ft 3 in, remained the performance-oriented choice where water depth allowed. An early shoal-draft fin was available for owners requiring less draft. Later, Catalina introduced a wing keel drawing roughly 3 ft 10 in, providing another shallow-water option without requiring a centreboard or swing keel.
The Mark I
The original Catalina 30 is now generally referred to as the Mark I. The Catalina 30/309 Association places Mark I production from the mid-1970s through 1986. Early examples were arranged around tiller steering, a straight cockpit and end-boom mainsheet geometry. As production continued, wheel steering became common and equipment, ports, interior finishes and systems evolved.
Because Catalina improved boats incrementally, two Mark I Catalina 30s built several years apart should not automatically be assumed to be identical. Engines, deck hardware, interior details and factory options changed during the long run, and many boats have subsequently been altered by their owners.
A 1985 boat such as DreamWeaver therefore represents a late Mark I: still fundamentally the original Butler hull and Mark I arrangement, but built after a decade of production experience and immediately before the Mark II transition.
The Mark II
The Mark II appeared in 1986. The underlying Catalina 30 concept was retained, but Catalina revised the deck, liner and cockpit. A T-shaped cockpit became one of the most recognizable Mark II changes and better accommodated wheel steering. Engine choices and other production details also continued to evolve.
This illustrates Catalina's general philosophy particularly well. Rather than replace a successful design with an unrelated new boat, the company modernized the existing Catalina 30 while preserving the basic hull dimensions and characteristics that had made it successful.
The Mark III
The Mark III was introduced in the 1990s, with the Catalina 30/309 Association identifying 1994 as the formal introduction of the model. The stern and cockpit received the most visible changes. The transom became broader at deck level and incorporated a walk-through opening and boarding/swim platform. Cockpit coamings were widened, stern-rail seating was added, and the deck arrangement was modernized.
Below decks, Catalina updated the galley, cabinetry, finishes and lighting and added fixed hull ports to increase natural light. The later boats also made greater use of low-maintenance materials. Despite these changes, the fundamental hull proportions and basic character remained recognizably Catalina 30.
That continuity was important to the class. The Catalina 30/309 Association's one-design rules record Catalina's position that the Mark I, Mark II and Mark III did not contain intended changes to the original hull, sail plan or ballast characteristics that would significantly alter basic performance. This allowed boats separated by many years of production to remain recognizably members of the same class.
Auxiliary Engines Through the Years
Because the Catalina 30 was built for more than three decades, there is no single engine installation that represents every boat. Early examples can be found with gasoline Atomic 4 engines and several small diesel installations. Yanmar and Universal diesels were used during various periods, and by the mid-1980s the three-cylinder Universal M-25 diesel had become a common Catalina 30 installation.
Engine type should therefore be treated as a year- and hull-specific characteristic rather than an invariant model specification. This is especially important when comparing surviving boats, many of which have been repowered during their lives.
Production Milestones
The production numbers illustrate the model's extraordinary success. Catalina's official chronology records Catalina 30 hull number 5,000 in October 1987. By September 1990 hull number 6,000 had been completed, which Catalina described as a new keelboat production record.
The International Catalina 30/309 Association identifies the final Catalina 30 as hull number 6454, completed on May 15, 2008. Catalina had already introduced the Catalina 309 as a follow-on design addressing a similar part of the cruising market.
Racing and Recognition
Although most Catalina 30s have spent their lives as family cruisers, the model developed an active racing community. The boat's early class victory in the Newport-to-Ensenada Race helped establish its performance credentials, and Catalina 30 fleets subsequently competed in both one-design and handicap racing.
In 2001 the Catalina 30 was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame. The surviving Hall of Fame account preserved by the Catalina 30/309 Association emphasized Frank Butler's ability to combine performance, comfort and cost-conscious production in a boat aimed at ordinary sailors rather than an elite market.
Why the Catalina 30 Endured
The Catalina 30's longevity came from a combination that is difficult to achieve. It was large enough inside to function as a genuine family cruiser, but not so large that ownership automatically required a large crew or complex systems. The masthead sloop rig was conventional and well understood. The fiberglass structure lent itself to high-volume production and long service, while the enormous number of boats built created an equally large ecosystem of owners, class associations, suppliers and accumulated technical knowledge.
Just as importantly, Catalina resisted the temptation to redesign the boat beyond recognition every few years. The Mark II and Mark III incorporated substantial improvements, but a sailor familiar with an early Catalina 30 could still recognize the later boat as an evolution of the same basic design.
DreamWeaver's Place in the Story
As a 1985 Catalina 30 Mk I, DreamWeaver belongs to the closing period of the original generation. By then the Catalina 30 had already been in production for roughly a decade and had established itself as one of Catalina's defining models. Yet the major Mark II cockpit and deck revisions were still just ahead.
That makes a 1985 Mk I particularly representative of the mature original design: the basic Frank Butler Catalina 30 after years of incremental production refinement, but before the more obvious visual changes of the later Marks.
Legacy
Decades after its introduction, the Catalina 30 remains common enough that it is still supported by an active International Catalina 30/309 Association, owner forums, archived factory brochures and a large technical knowledge base. This continuing support is one of the practical advantages of owning a boat that was produced in such exceptional numbers.
The Catalina 30 was never intended to be the most exotic yacht in its class. Its achievement was different: it delivered a useful combination of space, sailing ability, simplicity and value to thousands of sailors and continued doing so for more than three decades. That practical success is why the design remains an important part of American production-sailboat history — and why boats such as DreamWeaver continue to be actively sailed and improved today.
